The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
